Festival Sale Provides Strong Finish to Karaka 2009

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series concluded at Karaka today, with the pace picking up over the final 260 lots of the Festival Sale to conclude the sales week on a positive note.

The two-day Festival Sale has followed the trend set by the Premier and Select Sales throughout last week, with good competition on many of the yearlings on offer and, while not reaching the heady heights of 2008, results have been solid across the board.

Total takings for the two-day session are $4,498,700, down just 11% on last year's Festival Sale turnover of $5,073,850. With 375 of the 526 horses sold, the clearance rate for this session was a pleasing 81%.

The final Festival Sale average was $11,997, down 29% on a record $16,857 in 2008, with a healthy median for this session of $10,000 (down 17% from $12,000 in 2008). Both the new record average and median set in 2008 were up 20% on previous records for this session.

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Petrea Vela was pleased with the outcome of the Festival Sale, with final results in line with expectations heading into the week.

"The Festival Sale has fared very well over the past two days, rounding off sales week on a positive note. There was still good momentum in the ring all day yesterday and today and many vendors will be relieved that the market held up as well as it did.

"From the outset we thought that results in the range of our 2007 figures would be an acceptable result and we have managed to do that at this session. The 81% clearance rate is one of the most pleasing results and it's a credit to our Festival sale vendors who recognised the importance of meeting the market in order to get the most from the sale."

It was young Elusive Quality sire, Elusive City, who provided the top price of the day for the second day in a row when the colt at Lot 1636 was knocked down for $77,500. Offered by Haunui Farm from the unraced Dream Well mare, Contemplate, the colt was purchased by David Cole.

Continuing his buying streak from yesterday, the leading individual buyer for this session was Dean Wiles who purchased 19 yearlings for $181,000. His top price was $36,000 paid for Lot 1378, an Ekraar colt sold on account of Twin Pine Thoroughbreds draft.

It was no surprise that with the top lot of both days the leading Festival Sale sire was Haunui Farm's Elusive City, with seven yearlings purchased for an average of $37,679. The Stud also claimed the leading vendor by average title with nine selling for an average of $38,056.

The leading vendor for this session has been Wayne Larsen's Te Runga Stud, selling 41 yearlings for an aggregate of $378,250. Their top price was fetched by Lot 1569, a colt by their resident sire Strategic Image that went to the bid of Esker Lodge for $28,000.

All yearlings sold this week have until 5pm on 2 March 2009 to be entered for the 2010 Karaka Million. Click here for entry form and conditions.

Elusive City Tops Festival Sale First Session

New Zealand Bloodstock's 2009 Festival Sale got underway at Karaka today with a strong clearance rate the highlight on Day One of the two-day sale.

With 186 of the 526 yearlings catalogued for the Festival Sale sold through the ring today, the clearance rate is currently 80%. This compares well with the 84% clearance rate seen at this session last year, which was a new record for this Sale.

Turnover for the day was $2,036,350 with an average of $10,948 and median of $9,000, compared with last year's new record average and median of $16,857 and $12,000 respectively.

 Lot-1361

Festival Sale day 1 sale-topper, Lot 1361 by Elusive City.

The top price of the day came at Lot 1361, with the Elusive City colt from Haunui Farm knocked down for $75,000. Out of the Centaine mare, Outstripping, the colt was purchased by Queensland bloodstock agent John Foote.

Foote has purchased two yearlings at this session to make him the second leading buyer at the Festival Sale, in addition to purchasing the Pins colt from Sound Lover for $160,000 at the Karaka Premier Sale (Lot 256) and six yearling colts at the Select Sale.

The leading buyer of today's session was local bloodstock agent Dean Wiles, purchasing 14 yearlings on behalf of Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore based clients for an aggregate of $133,000.

Wiles commented, "We'll get them started here and then depending on their ability they'll either race here in New Zealand first or we'll send them straight up to Asia."

The leading vendor of this session is currently Totara Park Stud, selling 15 for $165,750. Their top lot, a colt by their resident sire Rusty Spur, fetched $41,000 to the bid of Matamata-trainer Andrew Scott.

The Festival Sale - and final day of the 2009 National Yearling Sales Series - continues at Karaka tomorrow, with the final 260 horses (Lots 1451 to 1710) catalogued for sale from 11am.

NZB Select Sale Holds Firm

Today saw the third and final day of New Zealand Bloodstock's 2009 Select Sale completed at Karaka, with session results holding firm but buyers selective in their purchasing.

The final sale median of $30,000 was unwavering throughout the past three days, with the clearance rate climbing steadily to 73%, and the final average price of the 681 horses catalogued settling at $37,366.

Total takings for the 456 yearlings sold at this session is $17,039,000 reflecting a 41% decrease from last year's record $28,839,500 for 483 horses sold.

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Petrea Vela says the final results have reflected buyer confidence in the current climate.

"Although there's been good activity in the ring over the past three days, and the general consensus has been that it's hard to buy a nice horse, this sale has suffered from a lack of buyer confidence to buy on spec in this climate. This session has traditionally been underpinned by pinhookers selecting horses for our Ready to Run Sale in November and while the top horses have sold just as well, without the pinhookers here in force, we've seen a softening of that middle market."

"After experiencing exponential growth here over the past couple of years, the tide has turned in buyers favour and there's a lot of good buying to be had."

 Lot-1155

2009 Select Sale-topper Lot 1155 by Tale of the Cat.

A new session highlight came late in the day, when yesterday's top price of $175,000 (Lot 861) was surpassed by the Tale of the Cat colt at Lot 1155 fetching $205,000. From the unraced Redoute's Choice mare Eyes Light Up, the colt offered by Hallmark Stud was secured by Perth trainer Lindsey Smith.

"I've had a great time over here, the sale was good for buyers and the good horses still sold for good money. I'm a fan of fast horses and I'm happy with the three I've purchased. The Tale of the Cat's an early running type and we'll give him a chance to settle in back home and break him in then map out a plan for him."

With three purchases in total, Smith is joined in the leading buyers tables by fellow Western Australian John Chalmers with eight purchased for $330,500. Other Australian buyers at this session include Kieran Moore, Anthony Cummings, John Foote, Patrick Payne, Danny O'Brien and Johnston Houlahan Bloodstock.

The leading buyer for the Select Sale was Paul Moroney Bloodstock with a total of 21 yearlings purchased for $1,182,000. He has been joined on the buyers' sheets at this Sale by a host of local agents and trainers including David Ellis, Dean Hawthorne, Dean Wiles, Alan Sharrock, Bruce Perry and Andrew Scott, plus international buyers Dan O'Donnell, Magus Equine, Danny Shum and Chun Hung Ngai of Hong Kong, and buyers from England, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and New Caledonia.

Heading the vendors by aggregate was Windsor Park Stud with 39 sold for total receipts of $1,528,500 and their top price coming for their Thorn Park colt at Lot 819. Leading Hong Kong buyer Magus Equine bid to $140,000 to secure the son of Group 1 Thorndon Mile winner Silver Chalice.

Bill Gleeson's Palmerston North operation, Wellfield Lodge was the highest ranking of the vendors by average with eight sold for an average of $79,000 and their Lion Heart filly at Lot 891 topping their draft at $160,000 to the bid of Mike Breslin.

The two-day Festival Sale is set to conclude New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sales Series starting at 11am on both Sunday 1 and Monday 2 February.

Select Sale Gathers Momentum

It was another solid day's trade on day two of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day Select Sale at Karaka, with good competition still witnessed on many of the yearlings catalogued for sale today.

Selling started in a similar fashion to yesterday, but strengthened further as the day progressed.  Lot-861

Select Sale-topper Lot 861 by Pentire.

This was in addition to the $30,000 Pentire colt purchased by Hawthorne later in the day (Lot 930), and the eight yearlings bought by him at the Premier Sale, including the second top price of the week at $775,000 (Lot 454), making him the third leading buyer of the Premier session.

Paul Moroney Bloodstock was active again today to complete Day Two as the leading buyer of this session with 14 yearlings purchased for $781,000. Moroney's top lot so far is the Pentire colt bought yesterday for $105,000 (Lot 591). His top price of the day was $100,000 paid for the Postponed colt from Tights mare Tights Delight at Lot 895, offered by Henley Park in Cambridge.

Overtaking Twin Pines as the leading vendor so far this session is Windsor Park Stud with 21 of their 28 horses offered generating $871,000, at an average price of $41,476. The stud's top price came at Lot 819 today, with the Thorn Park colt from Group 1 winner Silver Chalice (St Hilarion) bought by Magus Equine of Hong Kong for $140,000.

Featuring prominently in the top lots, one of the sires making its mark so far this session is Rich Hill Stud sire Pentire, sire of Group 1 winners including Xcellent, Zarita and Mufhasa. So far 11 of Pentire's Select Sale yearlings have sold for an average of $75,000.

Half Sister to More Bountiful at Karaka

A filly in the Festival Sale has seen a huge rise in her residual value thanks to the performance of her half-brother, More Bountiful, in the Group 1 HKJC Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m).

More Bountiful (Van Nistelrooy - Centaine Gu Li, by Centaine) ran an inch away from victory in the Group 1 event won by fellow Kiwi-bred Thumbs-Up (Shinko King - Regelle, by Exploding Prospect). In doing so he demonstrated his grit and determination that won him five straight in Hong Kong this season before the narrow defeat in the mile feature.

More Bountiful, trained by John Size, has shown all the attributes of a quality stayer that should bring him very close to first place in the prestigious Group 1 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby (2000m), set for 22 March.

Bred by Helen Phinney of Masterton, More Bountiful was sold at the 2006 NZB South Island Sale by Little Avondale Stud where he was purchased by John Foote Bloodstock for $38,000. He is now raced in Hong Kong by the Lucky Lord syndicate.

Newmarket Lodge Stud will offer Lot 1610, a half sister to More Bountiful, at the Festival session of Karaka 2009 on account of her breeder. The filly by Towkay descends from the great Sheralee (Sovereign Edition), winner of twelve races from 800m to 2000m including the Group 1 ARC Ellerslie Championship Stakes and five other Group races.

Racing throughout Asia and South Africa on the weekend also produced significant updates to yearlings offered at Karaka 2009.

Lot 77 - Filly by Viking Ruler x Lady Dehere: half-brother Oracy (Zabeel) won the Turffontein Computaform Express Graduation Plate (1600m).

Lot 199 - Filly by Pins x Rivertaine: half-brother Regency Horse (Stravinsky) won the HKJC Baker Handicap (1200m).

Lot 322 - Colt by Thorn Park x Westside Story: half-brother It's My Magic (Magic of Sydney) won the Singapore TC Canadian High Commission Trophy (2000m).

Lot 355 - Colt by Pins x Astrology: half-brother Rewarding Star (O'Reilly) won the HKJC Dyer Handicap (1600).

Lot 746 - Filly by High Chaparral x Quarry: half-brother The Real Thing (Traditionally) won the Singapore TC Canadian International School Trophy (2200m).

Select and Festival Sale Catalogues Now Online

The catalogues for the 2009 Karaka Select and Festival Sessions are now available for viewing online.

Following on from the 503 strong Premier Sale session (26 & 27 January), a total of 682 have been catalogued for the Select Sale (28, 29 & 30 January) while 526 will be offered over the two days of the Festival Sale (1 & 2 February).

Select Yearling Sale Festival Yearling Sale

Both sales have been experiencing an incredible run of success on the racetrack, offering buyers an unbeatable combination of quality and value.

The success of these sales as sources of Group 1 performers was recently headlined by Festival Sale graduate Altered Image (Strategic Image) recording a track record with his scintillating victory in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m). From the Select Sale reigning Mercedes Champion NZ 2YO Il Quello Veloce (Captain Rio) has provided the Flying Fillies Syndicate with many thrills. She won the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at two, and ran a close second against the boys in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas just over two weeks ago.

Further Group 1 winners from the Select Sale last season include Sir Slick (Volksraad), Rockdale (Danroad), The Pooka (Tobougg), and Prize Lady (Prized).

C'est la Guerre (Shinko King) and fellow Shinko King offspring Eskimo Queen make up the Group 1 graduates of the Festival Sale in 2007/08. C'est la Guerre took out the Group 1 New Zealand Derby and was recently an impressive third in the Emirates Melbourne Cup while Eskimo Queen has two Group 1 scalps to her credit - the Queensland Oaks and Coolmore Classic.

The catalogues for both sales have followed the Premier Sale's trend of offering a substantial increase in quality on previous years with the Select Sale offering 21% more half or full siblings to stakes winners on last year's sale. A comparison of the same group of horses in 2007 reveals a 215% increase in half or full siblings to stakes winners from 20 in 2007 to 63 in 2009.

The sale will also see nine half or full siblings to Group 1 winners go under the hammer including halves to three New Zealand Derby winners in Hades (HK - Helene Vitality), Great Command, and Roysyn, as well as half or full siblings to Group 1 winners Al Akbar, Explosive Burst, Honor Babe, Hustler, She's A Meanie, and The Mighty Lions.

Group 1 race mares will also be represented at the sale. They include Snap (NZ Oaks, NZ 1000 Guineas, Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, and Waikato Draught Sprint), On Air (Australian Oaks), Silver Chalice (Thorndon Mile), and Conifer Bay (ARC Championship Stakes)

This increase in quality has flowed through the Festival Sale also with an increase of 133% for catalogued siblings of stakes winners from 2007, while yearlings ex stakes winning mares increased some 200% from the 3 catalogued in 2007 to 10 in the upcoming 2009 version.

This sale will see the auction of half or full siblings to Baby Star, Grace Park, Grindley, Gypsy Babe, Happy Gilmour - Smooth Sailing, Hey Pronto, Lough Rinn, (Our) Sumo, Pushy Too, Resonare, Rum, Sista, Sokool, and Tootsie.

While stakes winning mares with progeny in the sale include Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes winner Comely Girl, along with stakes winners Blessed Sun, Chaleyer, Danjiki, Focal Point, Night Dancer, Perceived Value, Quasin, and Roman Penny.

Sires represented over both sales include first season hot shots:
