Top Performance By Piachay To Win Gr.1 Brisbane Cup

10 June 2003

New Zealand bred gelding Piachay proved too smart in yesterday's $500,000 Group 1 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Brisbane's Eagle Farm.

Trained by David Hall, five year old Piachay (Danasinga x Pleasure) took the lead in the straight and held on to win by a length over County Tyrone (Danewin x Nice Choice) with another kiwi bred runner, Homewrecker (Housebuster x Major Affair) 1 lengths back in third place.

Bred by Donald McLaren ONZM & his wife Rochelle of Auckland's Northfield Stud, Piachay was sold at New Zealand Bloodstock's 1999 Premier Yearling Sale for $100,000 to Belmont Bloodstock of Victoria. He was sold through the draft of the Ra Ora-Haunui Partnership.

Piachay who is from the family of Gr.1 Easter Handicap winner Eastern Joy and recent Gr.1 winning mare Pernod, is now said to be aimed at this year's Melbourne Cup in November.

Yesterday's third placegetter, Homewrecker is also a graduate of New Zealand Bloodstock's 1999 Premier Yearling Sale where he was purchased by his trainer Ray Lawson for $65,000. Like Piachay, Homewrecker was also sold through the draft of the Ra-Ora-Haunui Partnership, which after the closure of Ra Ora Stud in 2001 is now known as Haunui Farm.
