Final Results for Karaka 2022

After an outstanding six days of trading at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 96th National Yearling Sales Series, final results have been collated for the Karaka 2022 Book 1 and Book 2 yearling sessions held at the iconic Karaka Sales Centre.
This year the Sale was held during exceptional circumstances, with uncertainty leading up to the event due to the pandemic. Not only did NZB postpone the Karaka 2022 sale dates to March, but it also hosted the Sale as a closed event for the first time since its inception.
Over six days of trading at Karaka 2022, 701 yearlings sold for an aggregate of $74,382,500, a $13.3 million dollar increase on 2021’s results. The combined average has risen from $94,276 to $106,109 and the median increased from $62,500 to $70,000, while the clearance rate settled at 75%. NZB also saw a significant increase in combined domestic and Australian spend, which indicates the confidence buyers have in New Zealand stock.
The highlight of the week was the $1,000,000 purchase by Annabel Neasham and Tony Fung Investments, (Lot 161) a Savabeel colt out of Chandelier (NZ) (O’Reilly) from leading thoroughbred nursery, Waikato Stud. While Roger James and Robert Wellwood of Kingsclere Stables secured the second highest priced yearling for $900,000, Lot 508, a colt by first season sire The Autumn Sun from Landsdowne Park.
The leading buyer for the 17th consecutive year was David Ellis, who purchased 32 yearlings for a total spend of $8,170,000. He was well supported on the domestic buying bench by fellow kiwis Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Go Racing, Bruce Perry, Wexford Stables, Stephen Marsh, Tony Pike and Cambridge Stud just to name a few.
NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook commented on the final results at Karaka 2022.
“Given that the border was closed to international buyers and that we had to operate the Sale as a ‘closed event’, the results achieved over the six days were quite remarkable. It was particularly pleasing to see Australian’s spend $7.7 million more than last year.”
“Having overseas-based kiwis return home at the last minute added flavour to the sale ring and we are thankful to those expats who made the journey over at a moment’s notice.
“Our online bidding platform accounted for 14% of the total turnover and more than $10 million dollars spent remotely. Most notably, 65% of the horses offered received an online bid, in comparison to 37% in 2021. While 103 lots sold digitally this year, compared to 94 in 2021. The increase in these statistics year-on-year continues to reflect the confidence our buyers have in purchasing New Zealand stock remotely.
“What we achieved really goes to show just how resilient our industry is, and how hard the vendors and the NZB team have worked over the last couple of months in order to be able to host a physical sale,” he said.
All yearlings purchased at Karaka are eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million Series with two $1 million races available for graduates as two and three-year-olds, plus the $100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career. Nominations must be received by 5PM (NZT) on Tuesday 12 April 2022.
