Select Sale Market Strong - Showing Good Growth In Average, Aggregate & Clearance

29 January 2004

The results from Day 1 & 2 of the Select Session of the National Yearling Sales showed very positive increases in sale average, median and clearance rates compared with the combined results of the Select Colts and Select Fillies Sessions last year.

The average at the end of day 2 had reached a very pleasing $31,330 – a 12% increase on last year's end of sale average of $27,952. Most impressive was the clearance rate of 77%, an 8% increase from 69% in 2003. The median also rose to $26,000 – a 15% increase from the end of the 2003 Select Sessions.

The top price of the day was $150,000 which was achieved by two of the progeny of exciting young sire, Stravinsky. Lot 735 was a colt by Stravinsky x Rare Bits, purchased by NSW trainer Paul Perry from the draft of Belvedere Farm. Lot 788 Stravinsky x Shariat, a colt bought by Paul Moroney Bloodstock from the draft of Rich Hill Stud for $150,000. The top price at last year's Select Sessions was $135,000 in the Select Colts Sale. The fact that 2 yearlings have already well surpassed this figure is indicative of the strength of the market today.

Paul Moroney was also leading buyer after two days, taking home 7 lots for $379,500. Other leading buyers throughout the Select Session so far have been Graeme Rogerson with 8 Lots for $344,000, New Zealand Bloodstock as agent with 10 Lots for $324,500, Paul O'Sullivan with 7 Lots for $261,500 and Paul Perry with 2 Lots for $220,000.
