Royal Show Scoops Win In New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes

31 March 2003

A nail-biting finish in Sunday's New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes (Listed, 1400m) saw Royal Show (Deputy Governor x Bluebird Dancer) edge out Irish Belle (O'Reilly x Society Bay) and Cat Shmea (Felix the Cat x Ingresea) to take the Listed win with a flying finish to the line.

On soft track conditions Royal Show won by a nose over Irish Belle with Cat Shmea a further length away in third. The winners time for the 1400m was 1:27.7

Bred and owned by Jim Campin of Chequers Stud, this is Royal Show's second listed win after earlier this year taking out the Listed Gore Guineas. Her total career tally now stands at 4 wins and 4 placings from 12 starts placing her out of the money a mere 4 times.

The Michael Pitman & Chris Harris trained filly adds to the list of leaders in the 2002-03 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series and with only two races left the Series title is still wide open.

The three fillies heading the points table are Flying Coup (Tuscany Flyer x Blue Blarney), Royal Show and Tonic (Blues Traveller x Sent To War).

Tonic put in a brave effort yesterday, just missing out on third position, which would have given her a one point lead in the Series.

Following the running of the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes the points table for the 2002-03 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year now stands as follows

Flying Coup 7
Royal Show 7
Tonic 7
Irish Belle 3
Magic Bow 3
Mighty Myrtle 3
Cat Shmea 1
Smiling Asset 1
The Jewel 1

The next race in the Series is the New Zealand Bloodstock Leasing Stakes at the Hororata Racing Club meeting at Riccarton Park, Canterbury on Saturday 12th April.
