Dark Princess (NZ) (Cape Blanco), who cost $46,000 at the 2015 Select Sale at Karaka, picked up her first black-type success in Saturday’s $70,000 Group 3 Gee & Hickton Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham.

An impressive winner in Rating 82 grade on Livamol Classic day at Hastings earlier this month, Dark Princess stepped up to the big time on Saturday and was up to the task.

Ridden by Lisa Allpress, she burst through the inside in the straight and got the better of Dolcetto (NZ) (Per Incanto) and Raw Impulse (Makfi) to win by a length.

“She did it well today and she’s a really nice mare,” Allpress said. “She’s come back well this time in.”

A half-sister to the stakes performer Nordic Duke (NZ) (Viking Ruler), Dark Princess has now had 13 starts for five wins, four placings and $115,685 in prize-money for owner J G Snaddon – more than two and a half times her purchase price.
