Impressive Stakes Win for Karaka Graduate Legless Veuve (NZ)

Highly talented Pins filly Legless Veuve (NZ), a graduate of the 2015 Premier Sale, added another stakes win to her CV with an impressive display in Saturday’s A$150,000 Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Winner of the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) in the spring, the Stuart Webb-trained filly was making her first start in four months in Saturday’s race. With Mark Zahra in the saddle, she raced handy to the speed before scooting to the front in the straight and scoring by a convincing three-quarters of a length.

“The progression she has made from last preparation to this preparation has been outstanding,” Webb said.

“She has really developed and I'll probably just keep her to a light prep this time because she's going to be one of the nicest four-year-old mares you will see.

“She's clean-winded, she's athletic, she has got a pedigree, she's a beautiful type and she has got a race record to prove it.

“She's a lovely big filly and she was strong through the line there, so she could be a weight-for-age horse as a four and five-year-old.”

Bred by Waikato Stud, Legless Veuve is out of the O’Reilly mare Hyades (NZ). That mare has produced four winners from seven foals to race. Two of those have been stakes winners, with Tootsie (NZ) (Pins) claiming the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes and placing in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap.

Offered by Waikato Stud at the 2015 Premier Sale, Legless Veuve sold for $150,000 to Aquanita Racing. She has now had six starts for three wins and one placing, earning prize-money of A$248,400 for owners P J Fitzgerald, B D Fitzgerald, Ms A Canal, P S Wiggs, K Hart, Mrs C M Chappell, Mrs M O Corigliano, C Hart, P W Waters, G and Mrs P L Minton, S M Roberts, G H Burge, J M Azzopardi, P Evans, N Windsor, P Aspropotamitis, P A Young and Ms T Harcourt.
