Increases Across the Board at Strong Weanling Sale

12 May 2014

Karaka has seen a super day’s trade at the weanling session of its annual National Weanling & Broodmare Sale, with a broad buying bench providing a host of highlights including increased aggregate, average, median and clearance rate.

Resized Weanling 2014 Lot 90

Lot 90 by O'Reilly topped the session when purchased for $160,000.

With 295 weanlings catalogued, including 11 supplementary entries, a total of 200 have sold today for $2,656,450 at a clearance rate of 79%. Even with 60 fewer Lots catalogued and 35 less weanlings sold than last year, the aggregate rose by 5%. The average of $13,282 is a 22% increase on last year’s $10,857, with the median posting a 40% increase from $5,000 to $7,000.

“We are very happy with the strength of the Sale and the increases across the board,” commented NZB Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston. “We are seeing vendors offering a genuine product and getting rewarded accordingly.

“We have been working really hard on developing a strong buying bench for this Sale and couldn’t be happier with the turnout and the resulting trade.”

Of note was how well the progeny of this season’s new sires were received by the market, with the likes of freshman sires Cape Blanco, Dalghar, Pour Moi and Jimmy Choux all having weanlings in the top 20 lots sold.

But the top price of the day came from the draft of perennial local star O’Reilly – sire of recent Group 1 winners Sacred Falls, Silent Achiever and O’Marilyn - with his colt at Lot 90 bought by Ascot Farm for $160,000.

From a stakes placed daughter of Exceed and Excel in Miraculous Miss, the colt was offered by Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud, matching the price of its full-brother bought as a yearling at Karaka in January by Mick Price Racing.

The leading buyer at last year’s Weanling Sale with 8 purchases for $562,400, Ascot Farm also bought the top priced weanling prepared by Curraghmore Stud last year, with $115,000 paid for the Savabeel colt (at Lot 304)  that was bought by Chris Waller a few months later at Karaka 2014 for $165,000.

Ascot Farm’s Maureen Harvey acknowledged the previous success that she and husband Bruce have had from Curraghmore Stud.

“We viewed the horse at Curraghmore and we’ve bought well from Curraghmore in the past as we like buying well-prepared weanlings.

“He has an excellent temperament and he’s bred on a very similar cross to Sacred Falls and we plan to sell him as a yearling.

“We really liked his physicality as a horse, the two horses that we’ve had on the farm that had the same build as him were Unique Jewellery and Kildare who were both Group winners in Hong Kong.”

Ascot Farm was the leading individual buyer purchasing a colt by Shocking (Lot 250) for $40,000, in addition to the top Lot, taking their aggregate to $200,000. Phill Cataldo purchased the greatest number of weanlings, buying eight lots for $111,900 including Lot 73 for $60,000 in conjunction with Anthony Cummings.  J & I Bloodstock principle Joe Barnes was also active throughout the Sale, purchasing six lots for $165,000.

Today’s top lots reflected the broad buying bench present and active at Karaka, with purchases going to Australians Peter Creighton, buying under United Syndications, and Stephen Jostlear of Ampulla Lodge along with local buyers Bruce Perry, Wellfield Stud, Paul Willets and Prima Park Bloodstock, who all feature in the top 10 buyers.

Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud has asserted itself as the king of the weanling sale once again, taking the top spot for the ninth year in a row with 12 sold for $616,000 at an average of $51,333.

“There were plenty of people here to buy quality horses,” commented Cunningham. “Good, well grown colts were in strong demand and anything with a ‘fresh’ pedigree was well sought after too.

“My draft this year was of consistent quality from past years and it is terrific for my clients and staff to gain good returns once again. The leading vendor title wasn’t a goal this year as we only catalogued 13 weanlings, but very pleasing for all involved to achieve it for the ninth year.”

Selling continues from 10am tomorrow at Karaka with yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock, horses-in-training, and racehorses, followed by over 200 broodmares.
