The half-brother to New Zealand champion performer Sir Slick (Volksraad), offered by his breeder Monovale Farm, was knocked down to New Zealand Bloodstock as agent to become the fifth six-figure weanling sold at Karaka over the past two days.

With 370 weanlings in the main catalogue, plus seven supplementary entries, a total of 243 were sold for $3,184,450. This represented a final weanling average of $13,105, up 15% on the final average of $11,388 last year, at a clearance rate of 75%.

Yesterday it was another Coolmore Stud sire - High Chaparral - who dominated proceedings, providing three of the top four prices of the day to become the leading sire by average for this year's Weanling Session.

Also popular has been the up-and-coming son of Zabeel in Savabeel. Second on the sires table by average, 16 Savabeel weanlings have been sold for an average of $26,344, with a top price of $90,000 (Lot 33).

Always highly anticipated are the young horses from the first southern hemisphere crops of their freshman sires, and this year local sires Sahkee's Secret, Sir Percy, Alamosa and Guillotine were all well received by the market. Of them, the dual Group 1 winner Sir Percy fetched the highest price, with his colt from Biennale (Royal Academy) bought for $56,000 by Auckland-based bloodstock agent Paul Willetts (Lot 127).

Leading the first season sires by average was triple New Zealand Group 1 winner Alamosa (O'Reilly), with five sold for an average of $21,800 and a top price of $44,000 (Lot 332).

The leading individual buyer at this session has been Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, with three weanlings bought for $340,000 at an average of $133,333. These included the top priced filly of the sale, the Pentire filly at Lot 219 sold yesterday by Curraghmore Stud for $130,000.

For the sixth year in a row it is Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud that has topped the vendor table with 10 weanlings sold for $480,000 at an average of $48,000. This included three of the top ten prices of the Sale.

With the top priced lot, the leading vendor by average was Monovale Farm with all four catalogued entries selling for an average of $48,925.

NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela says the company is very satisfied with the results of this year's weanling offering.

"We were unsure heading into the Sale whether or not it would hold up against last year, so it's been extremely pleasing to see the level of demand for the weanlings. It is very heartening to see that good horses are still commanding good money, and in particular the demand from Australia is still strong. While there has been an obvious disparity in the strength of the markets for the fillies and the colts, we're very pleased to have had such solid trade at Karaka over the past two days."

The Sale continues today (Tuesday) with the inaugural Horses-in-Training session followed by the first of the 297 broodmares on offer (from Lot 421). View all the action live online at http://www.nzb.co.nz/.

The third and final day of New Zealand Bloodstock's 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale will be conducted from 10am tomorrow (Wednesday) at Karaka.
