Spieth (NZ) Sensational at Rosehill
23 May 2016
Three-year-old Karaka graduate Spieth (NZ) (Thorn Park) cleaned up his rivals in Saturday’s A$84,000 Merman and Sydeston Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill.
Spieth was sent out as the $2.80 favourite off the back of a recent five length romp in a 1200 metre Class 1 race at Kembla Grange but was up in class and coming back in distance. That mattered little after a fast pace was set and jockey Sam Clipperton had the lightly raced galloper travelling sweetly back on the rails before angling clear turning for home.
At the top of the straight Spieth found the gap and balanced up, Spieth winning untouched by one and a quarter lengths from the Gerald Ryan-trained Kings Troop (Redoute’s Choice) with Chris Waller’s Pioneering (Sebring) a further length away.
“Sensational. Couldn’t have been more impressive,” Clipperton said. “He handled himself really well. Bounced out and got into a good rhythm.
“He didn’t take a backward step when I had to push out. He took fifty metres to wind up and then he was off and gone.”
