The catalogue has been released online today for New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale (12 & 13 May) and will be in mailboxes this week.

May Sale 270

The National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale is experiencing a remarkable season, with weanling graduates of the Sale recording 11 stakes wins already this season.

Leading the way is star graduate Solzhenitsyn (NZ) (St Petersburg) who achieved history this season, becoming only the fifth horse in the 132-year history of the Group 1 Toorak Handicap to win back-to-back runnings of the esteemed race.

It has been three-year-olds that have really stepped up to the plate this season, capturing eight of the 11 stakes wins by graduates. Leading the way is Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Puccini (NZ) (Encosta de Lago) who bagged three Group 2 Guineas victories on his way to Group 1 success in the NZ Derby.

Also acquitting themselves well at age-group level was the Group 2 Wellington Guineas winner Sacred Park (NZ) (Thorn Park), Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas winner Sir Andrew (NZ) (Sir Percy) and Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes winner Orovela (NZ) (Saperavi).

There are 284 weanlings featured in this year’s Sale, all set to be offered on one action-packed day of selling on Monday 12 May. Amongst the selection are 62 sires from both New Zealand and Australia represented including Darci Brahma, High Chaparral, O’Reilly, Pentire, Pins, Savabeel, Starcraft, Stravinsky, Thorn Park and many more.

An exciting batch of 12 first season sires will attract interest with their eldest crops on offer for the first time at Karaka, including Cape Blanco, Dalghar, Echoes of Heaven, Gio Ponti, Jimmy Choux, Pluck, Poet’s Voice, Pour Moi, Redwood, Trusting, Uncle Mo and Zacinto.

The second and final day of the Sale will see 256 horses go under hammer, including yearlings (18), two-year-olds (7), unraced horses (3), horses-in-training (7), racehorses (9), broodmares (209), and stallion shares (3).

Among the nine racehorses catalogued is Saturday’s winner Ekraartastic (NZ) (Ekraar) at Lot 328. The Stephen Autridge trained filly was a strong winner of the $20,000 Rating 65 White Refrigeration (2200m) at Ellerslie by a long head, with 4.5 lengths back to third.

The three-year-old filly captured the second win of her nine-start career having landed her maiden success two starts ago at Te Aroha. In between wins the daughter of Ekraar finished fourth in the Group 3 Manawatu Classic behind Lady Cumquat (Duke of Marmalade).

“We are pretty happy, especially being a three-year-old filly against the older horses,” commented Autridge.

“She was very unlucky in the Manawatu Classic, she should have definitely run third, if not closer. It is a pity the good races are over for her but the breed gets better with time.”

Also catalogued on Day 2 are 209 Broodmares.

The great Zabeel will be represented by 12 broodmares in the Sale with successful broodmare sires Centaine, Danehill, Last Tycoon, Marscay, O'Reilly, Pins, Red Ransom, Redoute’s Choice, Stravinsky, Success Express, Volksraad and Woodman also represented.

Of the other Sale highlights is a draft of 23 being presented by Cambridge Stud for unreserved sale. The iconic stud has 7 weanlings and 16 broodmares that will be sold to the highest bidder in the ring, with another 5 Lots separately catalogued for reserved sale.
